If you haven’t come across Gabriele Magurno’s brushes before now, you should check them out. They are abolutely superb and a bit different from many of the brushes you see. There are five free sets of brushes and also some vector images that are free to take away.
The illustration below is one I made in Photoshop using a few of Magurno’s brushes. The guy in the picture is our Taoiseach (Ireland’s Prime Minister), Bertie Ahern who has just been re-elected for the third time. Apparently he spends over €20,000 on makeup services every year! I’ll just state now for the record that I am willing to be his official photoshopper for half that.

I checked out a book from the library that had examples of letterheads and posters from the turn of the last century, and I was so impressed with the amazing detail and interesting color combinations, I decided I had to redesign my personal blog (linked above) to look similar. I personally use a small amount of Smart Blur before I save an image as a JPEG. Because of the slight reduction in detail, you can compress more – achieving a smaller file size without any loss in quality!

Hummm, interesting stuff!
it’s funny how styles change. I’ve always loved the “vintage” look including Bauhaus style and Franklin Gothic and Goudy for typefaces!
I seemed to get into the more “modern” feel once I started out in web design. However! I seem to be going back once again to the colours, textures and the feel of “older” design techniques.
Oooh I wish I had a printing press – all those lovely little blocks and delicious ink!
