Tara over at the Graphic Design blog has an interesting post questioning why there are so few women web designers about. I’m wondering if there are loads of us out there but maybe women might be quieter on the promotion front?

I’m a “web designer” I guess you could say, maybe more of an aspiring one
I’vye always been into web design but never really learned a lot, I’m working with my fiance now with his freelance company. Doing easy template work for now hoping to move on to the more difficult stuff in the future!

I had never really given this much thought, but I do know as many women web designers as I do men. Some of my best friends are women designers like RandaClay.com, Lisa from eWebscapes.com, Charity from DesignAdaptations.com, Katy of Imbloggingthat.com and of course Tara and Lauren-Marie.

I’ve known more male than female web designers, but there’s a good number of us out here.
I wonder what the numbers are like in graphic design (print-side)? I know more female graphic designers than web designers. Perhaps web design has a “math and programming” air about it that scares off girls that don’t think they’re good at those things?
Maybe all the women who *know* they’re good at math are becoming CPAs and think that they’re not artistic enough to do web design.
*grin* Just speculation.

Hi Char, yep, I hadn’t really considered it too much either till I saw it on Tara’s blog. Thanks for mentioning some great designers there. I know Randa and Lauren Marie’s blogs so it was nice to see some of the other gals you listed above.

I think that’s an interesting perspective on the idea of maths and programming being a turn off. There’s is certainly a technical side to web design for sure and it probably is a major block for people starting out. You nearly forget that after a while when you get into the swing of things and suddenly your designs match up with the “computer” stuff, don’t you?

Yes, there do seem to be a shortage of us women out there doing web design. I design and teacher web – again very few women seem to enrole….I’m trying to make it my mission to bring more girls onto the scene.

Reading the same article I was quite astonished to find truth in the fact that it seems to have less of “us” in this (web designer) world. For some reason I have a hard time believing it – isn’t design still the main issue here and the coding secondary to some extent? – what I could see is that the “other” side might be more vocal about it and thus to appear more dominant?
