Sorry to hear that. So far the overall response to the new plant is very poor. People finding plastic and other various non food items in their bags of food, new formulas not working for dogs. From the retailer stand point it has been disasterous as well. The small pet store I work at carries both Orijen and Acana and we’ve had nothing but issues since they opened the plant as far as availability goes. Lots of stuff out of stock etc. Have a customer who has 2 cats with IBS who were on Pacifica and now that it has switched over to Wild Atlantic, her cats ended up in the ER because the formula switch triggered their IBS to flare up. Acana Pacifica is a great food. If your dog is well, you don’t need to change the food. Do they sell Acana in that pet store?

Acana dog food (certified by the government of Canada) is owned and manufactured by a company called Champion Pet Foods, a company that has been in the pet food industry for more than 25 years, having been founded in the year 1975.This practice in producing Acana dog food is mainly because of the belief Champion Pet Foods has that dogs of nowadays should still eat diets that their wolves ancestors in the wild used to eat, those that mainly revolve around meat (protein sources).Acana pride themselves in (and this is according to their claims) the fact that their pet food products are only manufactured in their own labs located in Alberta, Canada, and made from top-notch, fresh ingredients sourced only from Canada.I don’t understand why DogFoodAdviser gave new Champion Dog Food made in US one of the highest rating in spite of so many complaints.
I went to my pet store few days ago to pick up the dog food and since I know the owner, we chatted for like an hour, she told me she used to order Orijen and Acana every single week by truck load and it would be gone within a week. She didn’t order new for the last 3 weeks and still have on the shelf the ones she ordered a month ago. She told me she never had to hear so many complaints in such a short time for a single company. Main complain is dog scratching, something in new formula cause allergies. Few vomiting and diarrhea. I’m so happy that I didn’t take the chance to try the food made in US and transitioned my dog to the different brand while I had Canada made Acana.
C C, your case is the worst I’ve heard so far and kind of similar what my dog went through few years ago when Canidae changed their formula, in addition to your dog symptoms my border collie also was pooping blood. Vet visits with all the tests cost me a lot. He was on rice and chicken for over a month. What really helped my dog was my veterinarian advise to get heavy on probiotic in addition to chicken and rice. I started my dog on Wholistic Pet Organics Acidophilus, double of recommended dosage for the first week, then went with regular recommended dosage for his size. My vet was right, I saw the difference within the first few days. Now my dog getting probiotic daily and it does wonder to his sensitive stomach.
I hope your dog will feel better soon. For the time being, Acana dog food’s reputation is excellent as none of their products have been involved in any recalls ever since they was introduced to the pet food market, which is a very good sign that clearly says these folks take good care of their products. We had all the same issues, vomiting every morning, increased sickness, PH balance all out of wack, and all allergies returned no matter what type we bought, even the fish which used to be good. it is true the food doesn’t smell right anymore even to my nose. It got so bad we ended up with a $1000 vet bill for bacterial issues and stomach problems. Of course it took a while to put all this together because you trust the food and had been buying it for so long in the past with no issues. Stop buying Acana now, it is dangerous for your pets. I used to trust it and am so disappointing in this brand.
