STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - People hoping to adopt a cat from a city shelter for Christmas or Hanukkah were disappointed after a breakout of bird flu sickened 125 shelter felines, and adoptions were suspended while Animal Care Centers of NYC gets a hold on the virus.

For a long time, we were promised renovations to this shelter but it never materialized.Established in 1998, Bobbi and the Strays is a non-profit, no-kill animal rescue organization, located in New York, with an adoption center in Queens and a shelter in Freeport, Long Island.The city operates three full-service animal shelters located in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island. Queens and the Bronx currently have only animal admissions centers, which in 2014 received 5,834 dogs and 9,238 cats combined.
