The first time I came to Arkansas was on the second annual LHK9 service trip in April 2014. Spring was a little behind in Boston that year, but as soon as we left the airport in Little Rock I saw that it was in full force in AR. The trees had bloomed, roads were lined with wisteria, and the sun was shining. Everything was green- including me. At the time, I didn’t know much about the shelters in the south; I knew that dogs died and I knew that our rescue saved some. I thought that if you worked in a shelter, you must love animals. I expected the shelters to be clean and filled with happy dogs.Penned animals must be kept clean and sanitary and should not give off offensive odors. CRUELTY TO ANIMALS IS AGAINST THE LAW. This includes intentional cruelty, such as shooting or poisoning, and neglect. Cruelty to animals (including neglect) is a punishable crime in Little Rock. Cruelty includes physical abuse and abuse by neglect, which is failure to provide adequate shelter, food, water and medical care. The Little Rock Animal Village is sponsoring an adoption day this Saturday, November 8, from 10am to 4pm. According to Tracy Roark, Little Rock’s Animal Services Manager, “Neighboring Humane Societies, shelters from nearby cities, and animal rescue groups will join us at the Little Rock Animal Village where people will find the largest number of dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens available at one time in one single place.”Little Rock Animal Services will be offering a volunteer workshop. This workshop will entail an intense look at Animal Services and the Animal Shelter to give citizens an in-depth look at the challenges that face staff daily in public safety, animal welfare, animal care as well as adoptions. This program will allow staff to better care for the animals in custody of the City as well as inform citizens on ordinances and proper animal care.Tracy Roark, shelter manager for Little Rock Animal Village, said volunteers are a necessity. That’s because staff members have to attend to the basic needs of the shelter like cleaning. Volunteers are the heart and soul who help with socialization. In fact, Roark said bringing an animal outside and getting it socialized is the way to get it adopted. She got a call one day Gambit was back in the animal shelter.

"I'm still unclear as to what he was doing in North Little Rock," said Toland.
