The House Rabbit Network was started in 2000 and is a certified wildlife rescue organization that works closely with local animal control officers and shelters, who often bring them domestic rabbits that have been surrendered or set free. Between the foster homes, adoption counselors, and the North Billerica shelter there are about 125 volunteers but the network could always use more help. Because they receive no state or federal funding, they are always in need of monetary donations and supplies such as bales of hay and wood stove pellets for litter.

The officers work closely with local animal shelters, rescue groups, and wildlife rehabilitators to make sure the animals are safe and well-cared for. Ray said they are lucky in Billerica because there are many local volunteers who are licensed wildlife rehabilitators who will take in injured wild animals or abandoned babies. These rehabilitators often specialize in particular animals like possums, squirrels, skunks, raccoons, and rabbits or raptors such as hawks, owls, and other large birds. When Gualtieri and Ray rescue these types of animals they deliver them into the hands of the rehabilitators who will carefully nurse them back to health before releasing them back into the wild.
