Collar Free and San Diego Fashion Week

Collar Free San Diego Fashion Week CompetitionCollar Free is a company building a collaborative clothing company around graphic designers and trendy consumers. They are currently sponsoring a competition to design a t-shirt for San Diego Fashion week. There’s a lovely first prize of 500 US Dollars, not to mention the fame, glory and delight of having your t-shirt chosen as No.1 .

It’s a good opportunity to do a bit of designing and perhaps win a nice prize. The main rules of the contest are that your design includes Fashion Week logo and that the design works on a white or grey shirt. You can find out more about the rules of the competition and download a template for the t-shirt here.

Poster Design Follow-up

Posted by Jennifer Farley | June 16, 2008

Last week I mentioned that I was looking for some inspiration for a flyer/poster I was doing for two DJs. In the end I made a poster. My starting image was this;

John and Niall

So the challenge was two-fold; (i) Create a nice eye-catching design for a poster and (ii) Try and make these guys look cool!

In the end this is the poster I made.

I designed it A3 size in Photoshop but got it printed A1 without any problems. It looks really good full size. They liked it and the people coming to the barbecue they were DJing at liked it too. A happy ending.

Free, Cute Cubeecraft Characters

Posted by Jennifer Farley | June 16, 2008

Indiana Jones Character by CubeecraftCubeecraft are offering free paper characters to download and play with! They’re very cleverly designed and require no sellotape or glue - they just interlock perfectly. All you need is a scissors. I’ve downloaded a few to see if I could design one myself (and no, I don’t have that much time on my hands!). I particularly like the Indiana Jones design which comes with “idol and accessory”.

Revamp of my personal site

I finally got around to doing a bit of a tidy up on the design of my own photography and artwork site. It’s something I’ve been meaning to do for a long time now but as the old saying goes “the cobblers children have no shoes”, or something. This site is about eight years old and has gone from being a static site to a blogger site and now to its current form - a wordpress site. Ah, wordpress….

I’m happy with the design and now, I’m just moving things over, hanging up the curtains, filling the fridge and so on. Any comments or suggestions are very warmly welcomed.

Blogger Business Cards

Posted by Jennifer Farley | May 7, 2008

Brian Yerkes is putting together a collection of business cards of people who blog about design and very kindly asked me to contribute.

Here’s mine, which I did a long time ago. I’m tempted to do a revamp but the card is simple and does what it’s supposed to do so I’ll keep it for the time being.

Dream job for photoshopping, web-skilled NIN fan.

Posted by Jennifer Farley | April 28, 2008

There’s an ad on the LA Craig’s List, looking for someone with graphic design and web skills to work with Nine Inch Nails art director. It sounds like a very cool job, although the hours sound unusual.

“Work would be done mostly from home, with communication via internet and phone. Sometimes on-site work in the Los Angeles area would be required. Hours would be flexible and sometimes odd. ”

I’d love to apply for this myself - I’d say there’s huge scope for creativity but I suspect the Dublin - Los Angeles commute is possibly worse than my current Westmeath - Dublin commute for my teaching job. The job specs are looking for someone with the following skills:

- Very well versed with web development: Expert at CSS/HTML, Flash, etc. Knowledge of javascript and web programming for mobile platforms a big plus.
- Intimate knowledge of the web, websites, internet culture and trends, etc. Would be helping to maintain NIN presence on various web 2.0 sites.
- Basic knowledge of Photoshop (basic image editing/cropping/resizing)
- Has good visual taste and design sensibilities, and can create new designs/layouts from an established aesthetic.
- Basic knowledge of Final Cut Pro and common video file formats/compression tools.
- Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new computer-related skills.
- Experience with print production/layout software like Quark and InDesign a plus.
- Knowledge of Adobe Illustrator a plus.
- Knowledge of After Effects and/or Motion a plus.
- Must be SUPER Mac-friendly, even if their primary computer is a PC.
