This instructable is based on using a rented Rugdoctor carpet cleaner. Why rent? It's cheaper. Each time you rent you end up paying about $30. A rugdoctor machine costs $600. You'd need to rent a rugdoctor 20 times before you'd equal the purchase price. And that, friends, is why we rent.

The solution for the carpet cleaning machines can be very expensive! But we use the cheapest home carpet cleaning solution - hot water! I had a friend who told me that solution is often not needed. The last time I rented the machine, I just used very hot water (the hotter, the better) for cleaning the carpet. For stubborn or set in stains, I use club soda. Just pour generously on the stain and blot up with a dry towel or cloth. It has worked for me every time!

This is a good spot cleaner if you have occasional pet accidents. Don’t buy this carpet cleaner if you need to deep clean the entire living room or regularly clean the throw rugs the dogs poop or throw up on. Conversely, this spot cleaner has a decent sized waste tank and soap tank, so it won’t need as many trips to the kitchen to empty and refill to do those few spots you do need to clean.Certainly you can go to your local The Home Depot, Lowe's or Walmart and get a carpet cleaning machine rental for the day. Think of all the time it will take you to actually rent the machine, buy the correct carpet shampoo and lug the machine back and forth to the store. It is going to make for a long long day and it is still not cheap. Most people find that rented carpet cleaning machines and shampoo's are no match for professionals.
