Okay, so it’s not that great of a controversy, but when I posted that I don’t recommend covered litter boxes on Facebook yesterday after posing with one during my trip to PetCo, everybody seemed to have an opinion! Most commenters were like me, and didn’t think they were a good idea for kitties while others said they used them without any problems.
PetCo manager, said to take sum old litter & put it in the new box, & leave the cover on it first. Let her try it out on her own.

UPDATE: This box ultimately did not work out for me and was returned to PetCo.

I never actually intended to try this cat litter box system. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me. First we are asking the cats to use a litter that is unnatural; second, we are leaving fresh and old urine open to the atmosphere for days at a time, which can cause odor in the house. However, I have one, possibly two cats who sometimes pee near the litter boxes (Sequoia is my prime perp). I've discovered that she will use empty boxes with a paper towel in the bottom. I thought the Tidy Cats Breeze Litter System might be an interesting experiment. No one would use it without the pellets. However, the minute I put the pellets in it, it has been used a couple of times... for pee only (I'm hoping that's all they'll use it for). SO, this is really an experiment in providing an alternative for a cat or cats who have an inappropriate elimination issue. Covered cat litter boxes can help reduce odor & litter tracking, while providing additional privacy for your cat. Browse Petco's selection to learn more.

The Petco Cat Litter Box Storage Ottoman offers a private place for your cat to do his business and provides a functional piece of furniture at the same time. The ottoman is 36-inches long, 20-inches deep, and 19-inches high and is covered in a dark brown faux leather. It includes storage for the litter and scoop, as well as a roomy, plastic-lined interior to fit more litter boxes. The top opens to allow cleaning. This ottoman retails for about $80. I have found the So Phresh x-large litter box at Petco to be a favorite with my senior arthritic cats. It is x-large and low to the ground for them. This is without the rim or hood. What litter comes out is according to how much is in the box and how much they use to cover their deposit. I don’t know if I was not supposed to mention the brand, but it works.
