These popular pets are good for young children as long as there is also adult supervision. Like guinea pigs, rabbits are good for younger kids because they usually have a very gentle and sociable nature. While larger breeds can be especially gentle, Dr. Quesenberry advises that all rabbits should be spayed or neutered to prevent any aggression (and to prevent uterine cancer in females). This is especially important if you want to keep more than one rabbit in the same space. A rabbit can live from 8 to 12 years, can be litter-trained, and is easy to care for. Dr. Quesenberry notes that a proper diet is very important to ensure the animal's health and happiness: grass hay, rabbit pellets, and vegetables.
So, here’s our top 10 list as to why guinea pigs are good pets and make a great choice for many new pet owners:

If the answer is no, then you would be very wise to buy a book about guinea pigs before you bring a guinea pig home. Of course, the internet is also a great source of information, but its also good to have a few favourite books to curl up with and read. I have 3 favourite authors, firstly is Peter Gurney who has written several books about guinea pigs. I own a copy of which is an exellent book. Dale Sigler who has written a marvellous book called . Myra Mahoney another great author who has written If you are thinking of getting a guinea pig for a child, it would be a good idea to buy a book that is aimed at children. This way they can become involved in their guinea pigs care and learn lots of facts about them. Depending on their age of course, but a book called by Mark Evans, is an easy to understand book for children. To buy these books on-line, just click on each title or you could try ordering them from your local book store. With good care, guinea pigs live up to 12 years, with about six or eight years being the average. By learning all you can about your new pet; providing him with a clean home, a nutritious diet, and expert veterinary care; and giving him lots of love and affection, you can help Piggy enjoy a healthy, happy life.Guinea pigs have simple dietary needs. The easiest and safest way to make sure that your pet is getting a proper diet is to use a commercially available guinea pig food, which is sold by most pet stores and comes in pellet form. Pellets should make up about 1/2 to 2/3 of your guinea pig’s diet, with the balance consisting of hay (timothy hay is better for your pet than alfalfa hay), leafy greens like kale, lettuce (romaine is good, but iceberg should never be fed to guinea pigs–it has no nutritional value), and dandelion greens, and an occasional baby carrot. Don’t be tempted to give your guinea pig sweet or starchy fruits and vegetables, as their digestive system does not handle them well.Their main diet consist of hay and special guinea pig food that can be bought in pet stores. A guinea pig’s body cannot product vitamin-C on its own, for this reason when in captivity the pet owner should always add a little something to the diet to upscale the vitamin-C intake of his beloved little pet. Vegetables often contain high vitamin-C content, such as carrots or other green veggies. When buying a guinea pig you can choose a breed. Guinea pigs are often split into two main groups: short haired and long haired guinea pigs. Just like any pet you can name your guinea pig as you like, but beware that they only respond to high sounds. Most are often short, this way the cavy can easily get used to his name. Long names are not preferred as often guinea pigs don’t respond to them. To keep a guinea pig in your home you will need a proper cage. Small cages are not appreciated by the rodents as they love to have the ability to run around and blow some energy. If you want to become a proud guinea pig owner, just ask the sellers at the pet store to recommend you a good size cage and the needed accessories. Never forget to clean your pet’s cage and never forget to refill his food bowl, or else you will end up with a very sad cavy!
