Only a few states allow skunks as pets, so that prohibits the majority of Americans from owning one. If you do live in a state where pet skunks are allowed, then really think long and hard about whether you are truly willing to dedicate yourself to this pet for the remainder of its life, which can be more than 10 years. Pet skunks cannot ever be released into the wild, since they no longer have their most vital defense mechanisms, the scent glands.

Alright, so if you look at the state legality list on the main entry for pet skunks, you'll see for Georgia it says that they're illegal, except for the black and white ones. It referred me to which has a list of animals that aren't allowed to be pets, Skunk being one of them, which contradicts what the list on the Wikipedia entry says. The big concern is whether or not they have been bitten by a rabid animal, and it is certainly worth getting them checked out by your veterinarian.
